OCS Virtual Dedicated Servers
A virtual dedicated server is a slice of a full dedicated server, but unlike shared web hosting, provides its own unique OS and full root access.
Virtual dedicated servers (VDS, or sometimes referred to as Virtual Private Servers) are idea for development, testing, and work well for small and medium deployments. They are not quite as fast as dedicated servers, but are less expensive and have full root access and control over the hosting environment. You may also combine several virtual dedicated servers together in a more affordable and scaleable way than you can with dedicated servers.

Important Notes on Virtual Dedicated Server Plans
Mini-FAQ on our Virtual Dedicated Server Plans
Q: What's the difference between a VDS and a regular hosting plan?
A: Technically a VDS gives you an entire server instance (operating system and all) to yourself, instead of just an Apache virtual host and an account on MySQL. With that comes the freedom to configure the server any way you want. It also comes with the responsibility of keeping it up to date and secure, where in a regular web hosting plan this is done for you at the server level. From an operations standpoint, a VDS works much like a dedicated server, but it is a bit slower. If you feel you may need more horsepower than a virtual dedicated server could provide, please check out our affordable dedicated servers.
Q: What are the differences between the Xen and OpenVZ plans?
A: Xen and OpenVZ refer to the host software that enables the virtual machines to function. With Xen, you can run your own kernel and have swap space. OpenVZ uses a shared kernel approach that allows for more resources and burstable RAM.
For most cases, OpenVZ is the preferable solution, so we usually recommend OpenVZ plans. That said, both technologies give you your own root access and both are similar to that of having a real dedicated server.
Q: Can I easily change plans?
A: Upgrading between plans in the same technology (between one Xen plan to another, for example) is an easy procedure that typically doesn't take any longer than a simple reboot of your virtual machine instance (generally less than 5 minutes). Moving from a Xen plan to one of the higher Economoy VDS + plans is not possible automatically.
Q: I'd like to use cPanel or Plesk. Is there a minimum configuration required for them?
A: We don't advise running cPanel or DirectAdmin on any system that hasless than 1 GiB of RAM (Economoy VDS plans and above). We have found however that the Webmin /Virtualmin control panel seems to run well even in the 256 MiB configuration.
Q: How many IP addresses can I get?
A: We don't place a hard limit on IP addresses that can be assigned to your server, but there is a pratical limit as to how many you would want to have. You get one dedicated IP address with your server, which is generally enough for most purposes. SSL requires a dedicated IP address, but the one that comes with your server can serve this need. Should you find that you need more, you may add them in the virtual dedicated server control panel.
Q: Is there anything I can't do with my VDS?
A: Not really, you have full root access to your server. Of course, we require your server to contain only legally licensed software and not be breaking any laws or our terms of service. You may not send SPAM, abuse our network, or use/host IRC on our servers. You may send e-mail but we do limit the amount of e-mail you send on new virtual dedicated servers to 1,000 per day until we see a pattern of no SPAM complaints or policy violations. Most clients never run up against these e-mail sending limits, and if you do, we'll be glad to work with you to increase the limits to match your business needs.
